Kyle Walters Unsure of Bomber’s Free Agency Moves

Free agency was certainty interesting for the Bomber this year. In fact, I would say it was more interesting that other recent years. Winnipeg let players walk, and signed numerous new players; where in past years they worked on keeping the group together. Also, all of this was happening without any offensive coordinator, and in a year that Winnipeg would host the Grey Cup. Amongst the names of players choosing to walk was Kenny Lawler – I feel like we have seen this story before where he left for more money and played on a terrible team. However, this time he chose to go to Hamilton. We will see how that works out for him. When asked about this Kyle Walters said, “(Lawler’s price) was above what we thought and above what we could do.” Walters further went on to say that Kenny in an unbelievable football player, and he praised Lawler’s commitment to the community. However, he relented that as he looked around the receiver room he prepared to shell out that kind of money to ...

Moving on to Other Opportunities: Tiger-Cats release Two Recent CFL Draft Picks and WR Patmon

As the CFL has turned their focus from free agency to new prospective CFL players during a series of combines, the Tiger-Cats are evaluating their roster and finding ways they can cut the fat from their roster. The fat would take the form of players on their current roster that have had an opportunity to prove themselves, but have failed to define a role for themselves with the Tiger-Cats. According to the CFL Transactions list, Hamilton has released National defensive back Jonathan Giustini, Global linebacker Penei Pavihi, and American wide receiver Dezmon Patmon. Jonathan Giustini officially signed with the Tiger-Cats early this off-season before the start of 2025. Hamilton drafted Giustini in the 6th round of the 2024 CFL draft. Many times when players are drafted in the CFL Draft, CFL teams are willing to wait for the player they choose to grow into a role on their roster. Unfortunately, for Giustini, the Tiger-Cats have determined that Giustini is no longer a fit for th...

Moving North to the Hammer: Tiger-Cats Sign DB DJ Daniels

Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats made roster additions to add much-needed reinforcements to their defensive line. Those additions included adding American defensive end Julian Howsare and signing defensive lineman Phillip Ossai. Howsare returns to the Tiger-Cats after spending two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. For teams to win in the CFL, having a strong defensive line and a strong defensive secondary is critical. Howsare and Ossai should help improve the defensive line, and today, the CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have signed American defensive back DJ Daniel . Daniel brings experience from the USFL and the UFL, and he has the potential to be an essential part of the Tiger-Cats’ defensive backfield, potentially as a cornerback. Daniel comes to the CFL after starting his professional football career with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2021 NFL season. The 6’0″, 185-pound cornerback moved onto his first stint in a spring football league while pla...

American DE Howsare Returns to the Tiger-Cats, Additional D-Lineman Signed

There is an old saying that became a popular Bon Jovi song about not being able to come back home. That saying does not apply to American defensive end Julian Howsare . Howsare started his CFL career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2018. After playing four seasons for Hamilton, Howsare signed with the Calgary Stampeders as a free agent in 2023. Tiger-Cats fans should be excited that Howsare has decided to return to the Hammer. The Tiger-Cats proudly announced Howsare’s return with a tweet for the Tiger-Cats official account on X. That decision was to release defensive end Brandon Barlow just before Barlow was due a salary bonus. The Edmonton ...

The Tiger-Cats and General Manager Ted Goveia continue to raid the Winnipeg Blue Bombers roster. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats signed their seventh former Blue Bomber in the last several weeks, running back Chris Smith . During his time with the Blue Bombers, Augustine played in 93 games donning the Bomber blue, and from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons, Augustine played in 18 games a year. Augustine was always a role player for the Bombers, giving Winnipeg a change of pace...

Elijah Sandweiss Joins the Tiger-Cats Defensive Staff to Coach Linebackers

It is natural for CFL fans and teams to focus on the process each team goes through to build their 2025 rosters. CFL free agency and the CFL draft can be catalysts for CFL teams to either boost or doom themselves heading into the new CFL season. Despite those roster-building activities, it is just as important for teams to build their coaching staff so that the leadership needed to create a winning culture is present. Near the start of the new year, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced that former Calgary Stampeders Defensive Coordinator Brent Monson would be the new Defensive Coordinator for the Tiger-Cats for 2025. When coaches change in a particular dimension of a CFL team, there is usually a wave of other coaching additions as the new coach establishes his staff. Up to this point, the Tiger-Cats have not announced any other additions to their coaching staff. Still, earlier today, several CFL fans noticed that on the X account of Elijah Sandweiss , he is the new Linebackers positi...

Can Toronto Argonauts Survive Another Off-Season Of Great Turnover?

Image
For the 19th time, the Toronto Argonauts are sailing toward a new season as reigning CFL champions. Considering all the obstacles the Boatmen had to navigate after 2023’s demoralizing end to the team’s last Grey Cup reign in 2022, the Argos’ ascension back atop the CFL mountain was arguably the most gratifying triumph in the team’s storied 152-year history. Significant year-to-year team turnover has been commonplace since the advent of fully-fledged free agency in pro football. The excessive roster and team makeup change is much more pronounced in the CFL than in the league’s southern neighbor, the NFL. The legendary Jerry Glanville once infamously said the NFL stands for ‘Not For Long.’ In the CFL, the term ‘Can’t For Long’ would be more apropos because teams change frequently due to limitations or challenges, especially the successful ones who encounter pitfalls from their prosperity. Back In Time With The Toronto Argonauts Thanks to search engines, the moder...

Montreal Alouettes Sign Former First Round Pick DL Anthony Bennett to 1-Year Deal

The Montreal Alouettes announced the signing of Canadian defensive lineman Anthony Bennett. Bennett was a first-round pick selected by Winnipeg 8th overall in 2023. Bennett played in 18 games as a rookie which saw him record 8 tackles and added 3 special teams tackles. He was released ahead of the 2024 season and did not play last season. Bennett was a highly touted prospect after he recorded 9 sacks in his final collegiate season in 2022 with the Regina Rams. He played in 14 games with the Rams over 2 seasons and recorded 63 total tackles, 11 sacks, 20 tackles for a loss, an interception, a forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 passes defended. He was the third highest-rated U-Sports prospect in the 2023 CFL Draft and 16th highest overall. Bennett played for Florida Atlantic from 2015 to 2018 before transferring to Regina where he played in 2021 and 2022. @JonathanClink on X The post Montreal Alouettes Sign Former First Round Pick DL Anthony Bennett to 1-Year Deal ...

Montreal Alouettes Sign American DL Dylan Wynn for 2025 Season

The Montreal Alouettes announced on Monday the extension of American defensive tackle Dylan Wynn. Wynn was briefly a free agent prior to signing the 1 season extension. Last season Wynn recorded 18 tackles over 16 games with 12 starts. He had arguably his strongest game of the season in the playoffs when he had 4 tackles which were all run stops. Wynn was an effective run-stopper over the season as by my count he had 9 solo run stops over the season and 8 shared run stops. He did not record a sack in the 2024 campaign but did have 20 pressures over the year by my count. “Dylan did an excellent job with us in 2024, and he integrated our group very well,” stated Alouettes General Manager Danny Maciocia. “This veteran is very physical when he’s on the field, and we are very happy that he will continue his journey with us.” Wynn will enter his 8th CFL season this year. His career began in Toronto in 2017 when he became a Grey Cup Champion as a rookie. He played for the Argo...
