Bombers Release Patterson – And They Are Still In Need

Image
This is the time of year that teams release all kinds of players, most whom the average fan has not heard of. But when a more notable name is released, then that is attention worthy. This week the Winnipeg Blue Bombers released quarterback Shea Patterson. In 2021 and 2023, Patterson got into some games for Montreal and Saskatchewan. However, 2024 gave Patterson his first chance to start games. His record? 2-4-1. He amassed 1,655 yards – an average of 236 yards/game. But he only threw 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Yet there is a real problem that Winnipeg is staring down; Zach Collaros is not getting any younger and at some point he will retire. And if Winnipeg does not find a back up plan, they will be like Montreal at the retirement of Calvillo; a once dominant organization floundering due to no quarterback play. And to prove that Winnipeg does not have a great go-to option, one needs to look no further than the 2024 Grey Cup. When Collaros got injured, Wilson came in for ...

Stampeders’ Rookie Camp Brings a New Look and New Energy

It’s no secret that the Calgary Stampeders’ 2024 season was a disappointment.  At 5–12–1, they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004.  That, combined with their 6–12 season in 2023, points to a need for change in Calgary.  A three-day rookie camp isn’t enough to make any big predictions about the season. But, it is enough to see some changes. Whether or not those changes are enough to get them back to the playoffs is to be determined.  New Faces The trade that landed Vernon Adams Jr. was the biggest offseason acquisition . But he’s not the only new face in Calgary this season.  Six of the ten coaches on staff are new. New to the team, not to football. The incoming coaches have a combined 63 years of CFL sideline experience . Another big change that Calgary is trying to make is the size of the players they target .  “I think as a whole we decided we wanted to get bigger. I think we did that not only with the roo...

Zach Collaros Suspended But Does It Make Sense?

Image
Some breaking news this week that Bomber’s starting quarterback Zach Collaros is facing a suspension around drug testing. Collaros did not test positive for performance enhancing drugs, he simply did not respond within the mandated hours. While there is a lot of speculation flying around, this is the best report I have seen so far: Dave Naylor TSN Football Insider The Canadian Football League announced Wednesday that it has suspended Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros one regular-season game for failing to respond to requests for drug testing by officials from the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). A statement released by the CFL says the centre attempted to reach him twice by phone, once by text, and once by email over a two-hour period and did not reply within the required 24-hour period. While the league’s CFL/CFLPA drug policy calls for a two-game suspension over such occurrences, Collaros will miss just one game under consideration of ...

Golden Opportunities: The 2025 Tiger-Cats CFL Draft Picks Revealed

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are serious about fixing their defensive problems as soon as possible heading into the 2025 CFL season. GM Ted Goveia started that day of the CFL Global Draft and CFL Draft off with a bang by executing a trade with his former team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. That trade saw the Tiger-Cats and Blue Bombers exchange a pair of draft picks, and the Tiger-Cats received National defensive lineman Kyle Samson. The price for Samson was National running back Matthew Peterson, a 4th-round draft pick for the Tiger-Cats during the 2024 CFL draft. The early trade set the tone for the Tiger-Cats as they approached the CFL draft, urgently working on adding potential playmakers to a defence that ranked near the bottom in all categories. How much did the Tiger-Cats emphasize the defensive side of the ball in this draft? It was their top priority as they drafted seven defensive players with their eight 2025 draft picks. Each player drafted gives the Tiger-Cats a chance to find...

Hamilton’s Tiger-Cats Welcome New Faces to the Roster with 2025 CFL Global Draft Picks

Image
The start of the 2025 CFL Global Draft was the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to learn how general manager Ted Goveia plans to attack the CFL draft this year. Attack is the keyword, and during a draft in which teams try to find a diamond amongst many stones, Goveia made that the Tiger-Cats would receive at least one diamond. The Tiger-Cats secured that diamond in the form of Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive lineman Kyle Samson while executing a draft day trade with the Blue Bombers. If this indicates how the Tiger-Cats plan to approach the remaining portion of this year’s draft, then Hamilton could have a chance to maximize its opportunities during the rest of the draft. Tiger-Cats Kickoff 2025 Draft Day with a Trade To start the CFL Global draft, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats began the day by announcing that they made a trade with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to obtain National defensive lineman Kyle Samson. 🚨TRADE ALERT🚨 We Receive⬅️ DL Kyle Samson Global Draft First Round Pick (8th over...
