The End of A Lucky Era

Image
Known for his unique stadium entrances, eating sour gummy worms on the sideline, his propeller hat, and his huge smile, fans will miss all of that as Lucky Whitehead calls it a career. CFL fans may not know that Lucky got his start in the NFL. As a undrafted free agent Lucky joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2015 and played two season for them appearing in 30 games. After his time with Dallas, Lucky joined the New York Jets, but did not play in a single regular season game. But that would not be the end of his career. Instead Lucky found a spot in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019. Being a part of the team that helped Winnipeg break its Grey Cup drought endeared him to Bomber fans. However, after a cancelled 2020 CFL season, Whitehead would join the BC Lions in 2021 and play 3 seasons there. With the Bombers looking for a bump in their receiving game, they added Whitehead to the practice roster on July 8th. On July 30, 2024 Lucky moved on to the Bombers active ro...

A Line in the Sand: Tiger-Cats Release DE Brandon Barlow

The Hamilton Tiger-Cat’s new general manager, Ted Goveia, is sending a strong message during his first off-season. That message is if a player expects to receive a premium salary, they must perform at a premium level. Goveia sent that message by releasing defensive end Brandon Barlow just before he received a $30,000 bonus, according to reports by 3 Down Nation and Farhan Lalji of TSN. I’m told Brandon Barlow is being released by #TiCats . Hearing he’s expected to sign with @GoElks . Registered 14 sacks the past 2 seasons. @CFLonTSN pic.twitter.com/oIrc7SKH3I — Farhan Lalji (@FarhanLaljiTSN) February 16, 2025 During free agency in 2024, the Tiger-Cats signed Barlow and agreed to pay Barlow a base salary of $185,000 with the expectation that Barlow would be an elite pass rusher for the 2024 Tiger-Cats. During the season, Barlow produced 40 defensive tackles and five quarterback sacks while playing 18 games. While five sacks is a solid start for a defensive role playe...

Tiger-Cats Show Love to DL Casey Sayles, Sign Two New Players

This time of year, CFL teams tend to focus on using their resources and collecting the best collection of free agents to improve their team for the next season. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed several free agents this week in an effort to fill in many of the gaps in their depth chart. Signing new talent and upgrading as many position groups as possible is an important part of the off-season for CFL teams. In addition to signing new players and attempting to bring in bigger and better playmakers, taking care of the players who have built the team’s foundation is essential. For Hamilton, one of those foundational players is defensive lineman Casey Sayles , and today, the Tiger-Cats have announced that they have extended Sayles’s contract through the 2026 season. There were signs last week that Sayles would be getting an adjustment to his contract on the CFL Transactions list a week ago. A contract extension for Sayles would be a massive success for the American defensive linema...

Breaking Down the Tiger-Cats’ Free Agency Haul: New Additions WR Lawler, DB Stubblefield, and DL Garbutt!

The 2024 Hamilton Tiger-Cats experienced the exhilaration of having one of the most explosive offensive units in the CFL, and simultaneously, they felt the pain of having one of the most inconsistent defensive units in the CFL. For a Tiger-Cats fanbase starving for Hamilton to win their first Grey Cup championship since 1999, today’s free agent signings give hope that this could be the season the Tiger-Cats get another chance to experience a championship season. According to the Twitter account and the ticats.ca website announcements, the Hamilton Tiger-Cat s have officially signed American wide receiver Kenny Lawler, American defensive back Reggie Stubblefield, and American defensive lineman TyJuan Garbutt. Lawler Moving East to Join the Tiger-Cats The addition of Kenny Lawler to a Tiger-Cats expansive receiver room with multiple-time CFL All-Star Tim White, rookie sensation Shemar Bridges, and breakout receiver Kiondre Smith should be a perfect fit for the Tiger-Cats passing...

Bombers Sign Streveler But Will He Play

Image
While the Bomber’s Facebook post says “17 IS BACK !!!!!!! We have re-signed Chris Streveler to a one-year contract,” that is not quite true. The Bombers have actually “ agreed to terms on a one-year contract with quarterback Chris Streveler .” Why is that an important distinction? Because when a team agrees to terms with a player, none of these agreements are official as other teams have 2 hours before the deadline to counter offer. But let us say that they do finalize the deal; will Streveler play, how much, and in what capacity? In 2024 the Bombers completely misused Streveler. Some say that Streveler has developed a better arm after time in the NFL, I do not know. But I do not care either. Streveler has shown that he is best used when he runs like a dump truck all over everyone! Yet, somehow there is this false idea that the Bombers need to be tricky. Critics will say, ‘When Streveler comes in it is obvious that the Bombers are going to run the ball with him.’ And I do n...

Bombers Agreeing To Terms With Numerous Players

Image
In this most interesting time of the year, teams are agreeing to terms without a contact actually being signed. Why? Because when a team agrees to terms with a player, none of these agreements are official as other teams have 2 hours before the deadline to counter offer. So it is interesting when the Bombers post some of these on their social media, but leave others off of it, until they were officially signed. What should we read into that? I am not sure. However in the last week the Bombers have agreed to term with defensive back Josh Hagerty from Edmonton; receiver Jerreth Sterns from Saskatchewan; receiver/returner Gavin Cobb from Edmonton; and most recently quarterback Shea Patterson from Saskatchewan. Josh Hagerty Jerreth Sterns Gavin Cobb Shea Patterson There is one thing that jumps off the page with all these players; none of them have been in the league for a more than 2 – 3 seasons. This indicates that the Bombers are in a rebu...

Tiger-Cats Free Agency Roundup: Secure Five Free Agents, including DB Amos

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have started the 2025 CFL Free Agency period on the right foot. Several reports announced that the Tiger-Cats had secured contract agreements with several free agents, but those agreements were not official until today when the free agency period officially started. On the first day of free agency, the Tiger-Cats announced they had officially signed five free agents: DB DaShaun Amos, OL Liam Dobson, OL Jakub Szott, DL Miles Fox, and LB Brian Cole II. Jakub Szott was the only unexpected free agent signing today; adding Szott addresses National depth on the Tiger-Cats offensive line. Another surprise was the absence of an announcement about signing wide receiver Kenny Lawler. Among Tiger-Cats fans, there is speculation that the Tiger-Cats are waiting on Lawler to complete a medical exam. Still, Justin Dunk of 3 Down Nation released a tweet reporting the Calgary Stampeders offered Lawler a contract valued at approximately $250,000. Star CFL receiver Kenny...

Tiger-Cats Latest Transactions: Rework DL Sayles Contract, WR Stanley Added

How important is having a winning campaign in 2025 for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats? Suppose the Tiger-Cats veteran players’ willingness to rework their contracts to free up money for free agents is any sign of their commitment to winning. In that case, those veteran players are fully committed to making sacrifices so Hamilton can improve. Earlier this off-season, Tiger-Cats defensive backs Stavros Katsantonis and Jamal Peters agreed to rework their contracts with Hamilton. Hamilton’s best veteran defensive lineman, Casey Sayles, is reworking his contract. According to the CFL Transactions list, defensive lineman Casey Sayles has agreed to a new, reworked contract, and the Tiger-Cats have signed American wide receiver Dimitri Stanley. During the 2025 CFL Negotiation Week, the Tiger-Cats reached several agreements with free agents to help bolster Hamilton’s defensive line and linebackers. That means Sayles’s willingness to help free up resources to secure those players could help make...

Tiger-Cats Commitment to a Strong Secondary, Re-Sign DB Jonathan Moxey

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have invested their time during the 2025 CFL Negotiation Week, addressing the weakest personnel areas on both sides. In addition to reaching agreements with pending free agents, the Tiger-Cats have also been committed to re-signing key free agents. Many of the players that Hamilton has re-signed play along the defensive line and linebackers, like National linebacker Trevor Hoyte . During the 2024 season, the Tiger-Cats generally struggled to play consistent football on the defensive side of the ball. One exception is the success that a young, rebuilt defensive secondary had in limiting opponents’ passing game in 2024. Due to the success of the Tiger-Cats’ secondary, it makes sense that they are making it a priority to keep the defensive backs who have built the foundation of their defensive backfield. Early in the off-season, the Tiger-Cats re-committed to defensive backs Jamal Peters and Stavros Katsantonis while also re-working both player’s contracts ...

Tiger-Cats Secure Agreements with DB Amos and LB Cole II

The 2025 CFL negotiation week has been an overwhelming success with general manager Ted Goveia after he left the Winnipeg Blue Bombers front office. This week, the Tiger-Cats have reached agreements with several free agents, many of whom are from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.   Wide receiver Kenny Lawler and defensive lineman Miles Fox are just a few of the free agents that the Tiger-Cats are expecting to add to their roster at the start of the free agency period starting on February 11th. The Tiger-Cat’s most recent free agents that have reached agreements to come to Hamilton are defensive back DaShaun Amos from the Toronto Argonauts and linebacker Brian Cole II from the Blue Bombers, according to reports by 3 Down Nation . Amos should help give the Tiger-Cats one of the defensive backfields in the CFL as he joins Jamal Peters, who the Tiger-Cats signed during the 2024 free agency period. Brian Cole II is also an essential addition to the Tiger-Cats defensive front seven as they a...

National LB Trevor Hoyte Re-Signs with the Tiger-Cats

Image
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have had a busy week in preparation for the start of free agency on February 11th. This week, the Tiger-Cats have re-signed several of their free agents, including wide receivers Kiondre Smith and Tyler Ternowski. In addition to re-signing their free agents, the Tiger-Cats have addressed some of the position groups in their depth chart, including Montreal defensive back Reggie Stubblefield and several defensive linemen from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Reggie Stubblefield will likely be an essential addition to the Tiger-Cats roster due to his experience playing Sam linebacker. Sam linebacker is a high-need area for the Tiger-Cats, so it is no surprise that along with acquiring Stubblefield, the Tiger-Cats have also re-signed National linebacker Trevor Hoyte, who also can play Sam linebacker. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced the return of Hoyte through a tweet on their X account. Homegrown talent locked in ️ We've re-signed 🇨🇦 LB Trevor Hoyte! 🗞...

CFLPA Shares Historic Salary Cap Increase for 2025 Season

The Canadian Football League Players’ Association (CFLPA) is proud to announce that the CFL salary cap for the 2025 season will increase by nearly 10 per cent. This marks the largest salary cap increase since the 2014 season and the second largest increase during the modern salary cap era. The 2025 salary cap will be 9.7 per cent higher than the 2024 season as result of the first viable revenue sharing mechanism negotiated by the CFLPA into the most recent collective agreement with the CFL. The increase, to $6,062,365, is the result of strong overall league revenues driven by growth in the game on and off the field. “This increase is a direct result of the dedication and sacrifices of our members, both past and present,” said CFLPA President, Solomon Elimimian. “For too long, salary cap growth has lagged behind the economic realities. With this adjustment, we’re seeing a much-needed correction, one that finally catches up to the rate of inflation and prioritizes the financial ...

DL Miles Fox Reaches Agreement with the Tiger-Cats

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have established themselves as the gold standard in the Western Conference in the CFL since 2019. There is an old saying that “Impersonation is the Highest Form of Flattery,” and this off-season, the Bombers should feel very good as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats do their best to impersonate Winnipeg. Tiger-Cats GM Ted Goveia has spent this week investing in the Tiger-Cat’s future by acquiring talent from his past front-office job in Winnipeg. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats reached agreements to acquire Winnipeg’s pending free agents defensive lineman TyJuan Garbutt and wide receiver Kenny Lawler . According to a report by 3 Down Nation , Hamilton has also reached an agreement to add Winnipeg defensive tackle Miles Fox. The Tiger-Cats have followed up with two more free agents from Winnipeg, American wide receiver Kenny Lawler, according to multiple media sources, including 3 Down Nation , and National offensive lineman Liam Dobson, according to a tweet by Farhan Lalji of TSN. Hatch is Back, BC Lions Sign WR Keon Hatcher 1 Day After His Release

The BC Lions on Monday have signed WR Keon Hatcher to a 1-year contract. Hatcher was just released by the team on Sunday, which he requested, as the two parties were unable to agree on a restructured contract. Hatcher was previously going to collect a $40,000 bonus on February 7 if his previous contract was still active. Hatcher broke a thousand yards receiving in his 2nd season in the CFL in 2022 with 5 touchdowns and topped that with a 1,226-yard season in 2023 with 6 touchdowns and was named a CFL All-Star. He suffered a torn Achilles in the Western Final loss to Winnipeg in 2023 and his recovery lasted into the 2024 season. This past season Hatcher recorded 38 receptions for 608 yards over 11 games. He had his biggest game of the year in week 21 when he hauled in 8 passes for 117 yards against the Montreal Alouettes . Hatcher still showed himself to be playing at a very high level this past season. The news of him being back in the black and orange is fantastic news for...

The Montreal Alouettes have also agreed to terms with 2 Canadian players slated to enter free agency with the club reaching an agreement to sign with Canadian DL Josh Archibald and Canadian OL Cyrille Hogan-Saindon per sources. The Alouettes also announced on Monday the signing of American WR Kyric McGowan to a 2-year contract.   Josh Archibald comes home to Montreal where he was born. He played in 17 games with the BC Lions over this past season which saw him record 15 tackles, 6 special team tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 sacks. He has since played in 34 regular season games.  Archibald primarily was a special teams player before this year and did not have a defensive tackle prior to this past season.
