Known for his unique stadium entrances, eating sour gummy worms on the sideline, his propeller hat, and his huge smile, fans will miss all of that as Lucky Whitehead calls it a career.
CFL fans may not know that Lucky got his start in the NFL. As a undrafted free agent Lucky joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2015 and played two season for them appearing in 30 games.
After his time with Dallas, Lucky joined the New York Jets, but did not play in a single regular season game. But that would not be the end of his career. Instead Lucky found a spot in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019.
Being a part of the team that helped Winnipeg break its Grey Cup drought endeared him to Bomber fans. However, after a cancelled 2020 CFL season, Whitehead would join the BC Lions in 2021 and play 3 seasons there. With the Bombers looking for a bump in their receiving game, they added Whitehead to the practice roster on July 8th. On July 30, 2024 Lucky moved on to the Bombers active roster.
The Bombers were hoping for some magic that Lucky had shown previously.
However, what really plagued Lucky in the 2024 season were his fumbles. Both in the 2024 Western Final, and in the 2024 Grey Cup, securing that ball was a challenge for Whitehead. At the 2024 Grey Cup after his fumble, I turned to my son and said, “That’s the deal breaker; he won’t be back in Winnipeg next year.” Bomber’s Head Coach Mike O’Shea has shown threw the years that he has little patience for returners that do not secure the football.
The question that comes out of agreeing to terms with Gavin Cobb is what happens to Whitehead. I am a really big Lucky Whitehead fan. But he is not the same player he used to be. In fact, Whitehead fumbled a return both in the 2024 Western Final and the 2024 Grey Cup. I think those fumbles sealed his fate and he is going to find himself on the outside.

Wherever your life takes you next, best of luck Lucky!
And if you are ever looking for an extra ticket to the Bomber’s game, hit me up…I have 3 seats in Row 1 behind the visitor’s bench on the 50 yard line (but you know that based on some of our past interactions)!
The CFL will miss you; a consistent professional and fan favorite!

Just because the Calgary Stampeders won in week one, it doesn’t mean they don’t have things to work on. Sometimes wins can hide issues. Good teams don’t let that happen; they continue to improve, regardless of the results. Here are some of the week 1 mistakes that Calgary needs to improve if they want to enjoy a successful season. Offense Scoring 38 points and winning is obviously not a bad game. But the Calgary Stampeders’ offense wasn’t perfect. There is still plenty of room for improvement. The biggest issue was turnovers. Vernon Adams Jr. threw two interceptions. Adams had an overall good day (19/28 for 284 yards), but he will need to take care of the ball better in the future. The Stampeders also had a turnover on downs on a failed QB sneak attempt by P.J. Walker. Walker is new in that role, but on 3rd and less than one, he needs to be near automatic. The offensive line is another issue. Allowing two sacks isn’t terrible, b...
In a matchup between the CFL’s last two Grey Cup Champions. The Toronto Argonauts fell to the Montreal Alouettes 28-10 in their season-opening game at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, marking their first opening-weekend loss under head coach Ryan Dinwiddie. The game, a rematch of the last three Eastern Finals, saw the Alouettes, led by newly anointed starting quarterback Davis Alexander, capitalize on Toronto’s mistakes to secure a convincing victory. On a night that saw the audible horns from the Montreal faithful go silent. It was the Alouettes sounding off the loudest message. CFL 2025 Opening Week: Montreal Alouettes 28 Toronto Argonauts 10 Recap The defending CFL champion Argos didn’t look like an established championship team on Friday night. Toronto, sporting 13 new starters since last November’s Grey Cup triumph, looked out of sorts all evening, committing several costly mistakes, including one turnover in scoring range early on, and a pivotal faux pas right before...
Week 2 of the 2025 CFL Season sees the defending Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts kick off their home schedule at BMO Field against the Calgary Stampeders . Saturday afternoon’s game is intended to be a celebration of the Argos’ Grey Cup 111 victory and their 19th overall CFL championship in front of their loyal Double Blue crowd. But Toronto is looking to turn the page on what was an uninspiring 2025 debut in Montreal. Still without superstar quarterback Chad Kelly, and sporting 13 new starters in their lineup. The Argonauts didn’t look like defending champs in a mistake-filled 28-10 loss to Montreal. In Week 2, Toronto faces a proud Calgary club that has moved past last year’s disappointing 5-12-1 campaign. It was the first time in two decades, that the Stampeders missed the postseason. The revamped Stamps are coming off an impressive 38-26 victory over Hamilton at home in Week 1. Led by new arrival Vernon Adams, and an exceptional ground attack. Calgary appears to be...
