Justin Whiteside Signs with Tiger-Cats: The Latest Addition to Hamilton’s Linebacker Corps

In the Spring of 2024, when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats essentially forced iconic linebacker Simoni Lawrence to retire and take a PR position with the front office, observers of the Tiger-Cats assumed that the Tiger-Cats had a plan to improve the linebackers position group. The 2024 CFL season indicated that if someone thought that the Tiger-Cats had a plan, it is evident that they did not have a solid plan due to the defensive front seven being a disaster all season long. What was once one of the best units in the CFL has now become one of the worst. If you track the Tiger-Cats’ decisions from last season, the Tiger-Cats could have linebacker Kyle Wilson step up and become a more productive player. American linebacker Ray Wilborn joined the Tiger-Cats in an attempt to replace Simoni Lawrence. Still, Simoni is a much more difficult player to replace than the Tiger-Cats believed would be possible. This off-season, new GM, Ted Goveia, has acknowledged this mistake, although he has never ...

Johnson Signs on the Dotted Line: Tiger-Cats Land Cowboys’ Linebacker

Hamilton Tiger-Cats have invested their time and resources this week to reinforce their team on the defensive side of the ball. During the 2024 CFL season, the Tiger-Cats struggled to stop their opponents. They made it difficult for the Tiger-Cats to win consistently after Hamilton had one of their best seasons on the offensive side of the ball in recent history. This week, the Tiger-Cats have added a collection of defensive linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs to improve their product on the field. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats signed linebacker Chris Russell Jr. , who came to the CFL after looking for an opportunity to make an impact in the NFL. However, the Tiger-Cats were not satisfied, so according to the CFL Transactions list, they have acquired another linebacker. American linebacker Jason Johnson is the latest addition to the Tiger-Cats roster, bringing NFL experience to the CFL. Jason Johnson comes to the CFL after spending the 2024 NFL season with the Dalla...

It’s Knight-Time in the Hammer: Tiger-Cats Sign DB Qwuantrezz Knight

For the last several weeks, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have made several investments in improving their defensive front seven . Please make no mistake: the defensive front seven was a problem in 2024, and they need to do as much as they can to improve that area on the defensive side of the ball. While attempting to fix a problem like a poor-performing defensive front seven, it can be easy to develop tunnel vision, but the Tiger-Cats have avoided that pitfall so far. The Tiger-Cat’s most recent addition to their roster demonstrates that while GM Ted Goveia focuses on upgrading the defensive line and linebacking units, he also keeps an eye open for potentially transformative players. According to the CFL Transactions list, the Tiger-Cats have signed American defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight. A significant intangible quality that separates Knight from other free agents is his belief that he has not received a fair chance to make a team in the NFL. The 6’0″, 199-pound Knight is a nat...

New Blood in Town: Tiger-Cats Sign DE Tramel Walthour

For another week this off-season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats continue to stockpile defensive linemen to help rebuild a defensive line that was one of the least effective in the CFL in 2024. Last week, the Tiger-Cats signed d efensive lineman Maalik Hall after Hall had spent some time with the New York Jets in the NFL and the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL. This week, the CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have signed defensive end Tramel Walthour. Recent roster moves by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats show that they are working to solve the problems that struck their defensive front seven last season. In the CFL, finding defensive and offensive linemen is always a struggle, and when a team finds players with potential upside, like Tramel Walthour, signing a player like Walthour is a win-win situation for both the player and the team. If Walthour enters training camp and becomes a dominant player, the Tiger-Cats have found a diamond in the rough that could become a foundat...

LB Chris Russell Jr. Brings Texas Flair to the Tiger-Cats

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats continue to acquire more prospects in the hope that they will find a combination of players that will help them upgrade their defensive front seven. During the 2024 CFL season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats front seven had one of the worst performances in the CFL. That was exceptionally disappointing for Tiger-Cats fans after Hamilton spent their 2024 offseason acquiring players to rebuild their defensive line and linebacking core. This offseason, the Tiger-Cats continue to acquire new talent in hopes of upgrading their defensive line and linebacking units. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats signed American defensive lineman Maalik Hall after he spent some time with the New York Jets in the NFL. According to the CFL Transactions list, the Tiger-Cats have also signed American linebacker Chris Russell Jr . The 6’1″, 235-pound Russell comes to the CFL after being signed by the Memphis Showboats in January, but the Showboats released Russell before the start of t...

New York Jets to Hamilton: Tiger-Cats Add DL Maalik Hall

In the world of football, if a team is struggling in a specific area on the field or system, there are three ways to solve the problem. First, the team could change its personnel or approach to attacking an area. Second, a team can improve its technique or find a better way to disguise its strategy. Third, it can simply add more people to the area and outnumber the opponent. They are choosing all of the above regarding the Tiger-Cat’s strategy to improve a defensive front seven that was one of the worst performing in the CFL in 2024. So far this off-season, the Tiger-Cats have made a change at defensive coordinator, bringing on Brent Monson from the Calgary Stampeders . Hamilton has also made several changes to their assistant coaches on the defensive side of the ball, including adding a new defensive line coach and a new coach for the Tiger-Cats linebackers. That leaves only one strategy for the Tiger-Cats to make more adjustments to their defensive front, specifically to thei...

More Bricks in the Wall: Tiger-Cats Sign Two Offensive Lineman

Quality players on the offensive line are among the most common problems when teams build their teams in the CFL. As the Tiger-Cats prepare to make a significant turnaround in 2025 after not making the playoffs during the 2024 season, GM Ted Goveia has been working to build up the offensive and defensive lines for Hamilton. Recently, the Tiger-Cats announced that they signed former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Tyshun Render ; now, the Tiger-Cats have signed two more linemen, this time on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage. According to the CFL Transactions list, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed Darrin Paulo and Bryson Broadway, two American offensive linemen. Paulo comes to Hamilton after spending several NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions and the 2024 UFL season last spring with the Memphis Showboats. Broadway does not have NFL or UFL experience, but his 6’5″, 290-pound frame makes him the prototypical candidate for an offensive lineman in the CFL. The 6’3″, 3...

Defensive Line Reinforcement: Tiger-Cats Welcome Tyshun Render to the Team!

In case anyone has been wondering, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats know they need to improve their defensive line coming into the 2025 season. Recently, the Tiger-Cats officially announced their coaching staff for 2025 , and one aspect of that announcement that stood out shows how the Tiger-Cats view their team. Most of the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball returns for the 2025 season, besides James Tuck, who is moving on from player to coach. They needed to acquire a new offensive line coach because the Tiger-Cats promoted Dennis McKnight to Special Teams Coordinator. On the defensive side of the ball, all of the 2025 coaches are new to the Tiger-Cats except for their defensive backs coach. In case you didn’t know, the Tiger-Cats defensive backfield is one of the best in the CFL, and it would not make sense to replace a very successful coach. Excluding defensive backs, there is a new Defensive Coordination in Brent Monson, a new coach for linebackers, and a new coach for th...

Welcome to the 2025 Season: The Hamilton Tiger-Cats Coaching Staff

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are another step closer to being ready for a big turnaround during the 2025 CFL season. In 2024, first-year Tiger-Cats head coach Scott Milanovich struggled to build a championship team culture, and that resulted in several coaching staff moves mid-season. Needing to replace a defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator during the season does not reflect continuity and stability among the members of a coaching staff or a franchise. Coming into the 2025 season, it is easy to see that Milanovich and the Tiger-Cats are looking to build off the success on the offensive side of the ball while trying to shore up the defensive side of the ball. One major weakness for the Tiger-Cats during the first several games of the 2024 season was a general lack of management with their special teams, units, and the result was Dennis McKnight earning his opportunity to lead the special teams units, those units improved dramatically after that coaching change. Success a...

Here are four times that’s happened: 2016 Grey Cup Widely considered the greatest upsets in CFL history, the 2016 Grey Cup final was a match out of left field. It had been a poor season for the East, and the Redblacks, with an 8-9-1 losing record, were only in the finals because the Calgary Stampeders couldn’t play against themselves. Everyone knew it was a sure thing. Fans had bought their tickets and download Betway app in anticipation of the Stampeder’s win. The Stampeders were heavy favorites, with all bookies placing the odds for them to win. However, in what became the third game to go into overtime, the Redblacks pulled an upset and beat the un...
