Calgary Stampeders Week 1 Recap: Breaking Down What Still Needs Work
Just because the Calgary Stampeders won in week one, it doesn’t mean they don’t have things to work on.
Sometimes wins can hide issues. Good teams don’t let that happen; they continue to improve, regardless of the results.
Here are some of the week 1 mistakes that Calgary needs to improve if they want to enjoy a successful season.
Offense
Scoring 38 points and winning is obviously not a bad game. But the Calgary Stampeders’ offense wasn’t perfect. There is still plenty of room for improvement.
The biggest issue was turnovers. Vernon Adams Jr. threw two interceptions. Adams had an overall good day (19/28 for 284 yards), but he will need to take care of the ball better in the future.
The Stampeders also had a turnover on downs on a failed QB sneak attempt by P.J. Walker. Walker is new in that role, but on 3rd and less than one, he needs to be near automatic.
The offensive line is another issue. Allowing two sacks isn’t terrible, but there were also several plays that Adams was forced to keep alive with his legs. Also, there were a few miscommunications on run blitzes that resulted in lost yardage.
Since it was the first game, miscommunication by the line isn’t a major concern. But, they need to improve soon to keep it from becoming a trend.
Defense

The defense had an overall good day. Bo Levi Mitchell put up a respectable stat line, but it could have been worse.
Mitchell is one of the best QBs around, so it’s unrealistic to expect the defense to completely shut him down. All things considered, the defense did a good job keeping him from doing too much damage.
The real problem for the defense was the lack of a pass rush. They managed to get pressure at times, but came up empty with zero sacks. In the future, the defensive line needs to get home more often.
Special Teams
Special teams won the game for the Calgary Stampeders. But their kickoff coverage was a glaring weakness on an otherwise great day.
They allowed a kick return for a TD, which is obviously never good. But, they also gave up several other big returns.
Kickoff return yardage
- Hamilton: 7–233 (33.3 average)
- Calgary: 3–32 (10.7)
Field position is a huge component of the CFL game. Calgary will have to find a way to win the kickoff battle if they hope to keep winning games.
Penalties
Game one is never perfect. Some mistakes and penalties are expected. The Calgary Stampeders are no exception.
The Stamps were penalized 8 times for 85 yards. Several of those penalties came at costly times. Coach Dickenson will need to get those mistakes cleaned up.
Overall, it was a great first game for the Stampeders. If they can continue to improve, the season’s outlook is brighter than last year’s.
