The BC Lions hit the road after starting the 2024 campaign off with a victory at home over Edmonton, 31-14. Now the Lions will take on the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg’s season opener. BC has a short week playing 5 days after their previous game, while Winnipeg is coming off the bye.

B.C. Lions (1-0): The BC Lions opened up their season with a decisive victory over the Edmonton Elks at home, winning 31 to 14. Nathan Rourke was highly efficient, completing 37 of his 36 passes for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns. Stanley Berryhill III led the way in receiving, catching 6 passes for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns. James Butler rushed 10 times for 68 yards and a touchdown.

It was a successful day on defense as the Lions held Tre Ford to under 200 yards with 1 interception and no touchdowns. They also kept the running backs to just 29 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-0): The Blue Bombers will look to get back to the Grey Cup for the 5th straight season this year after losing in the Grey Cup to Toronto last year. Winnipeg is the host city for this year’s Grey Cup, making it an extremely important season for the Blue Bombers team, which has been very good for several years now. Winnipeg will have Chris Streveler under center with Zach Collaros serving a 1 game suspension.

Run Stops Early

Winnipeg went away from the ground game in their last game to a large degree, despite having the MOP in Brady Oliveira at running back. If BC can get some stops early, they can try to influence Winnipeg to repeat this mistake.

Contain Streveler

Streveler has the capacity to pick up yards with his legs if you do not pressure him in a way that contains him. BC will want to ensure their pass coverage is on point as Streveler does have the ability to make plays with his arm as well.

Pound the Rock

A strong run game is crucial to a balanced offense and will help control the environment in hostile territory.

Berryhill caught 6 of his 10 targets for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns in week 1.

#86 WR Jevon Cottoy

Cottoy was the most targeted receiver in week 1, catching 7 of his 9 targets for 88 yards.

#24 RB James Butler

Butler rushed 10 times for 68 yards and a touchdown in week 1 and caught 3 passes for 22 yards.

#26 DB Robert Carter

Carter led the team in tackles in week 1 with 7.

#90 DE Mathieu Betts

Betts had 6 tackles, including a TFL, last week.

#17 Chris Strevler

Streveler threw a touchdown pass in Winnipeg’s Grey Cup victory in 2019 before spending the next 3 seasons in the NFL. In 2022, he led the New York Jets to a comeback victory in all 3 of their preseason games.

#10 WR Nic Demski

Demski has over a thousand yards in each of the last 2 seasons. Last year he caught a career high 76 passes for 1,030 yards and 6 touchdowns.

#83 Dalton Schoen WR

Schoen’s season was cut short by injury last year, with him catching 14 passes for 159 yards over 3 games. Over his first 2 CFL seasons, he caught 141 passes for 1,663 yards and 26 touchdowns over 34 games.

#20 RB Brady Oliveira

Oliveira was the MOP last year after having his third straight season rushing over a thousand yards. Last year, he rushed 239 times for 1,353 yards (5.7 average) and 3 touchdowns while adding 57 receptions for 476 yards and a touchdown.

Calgary Stampeders Week 1 Recap: Breaking Down What Still Needs Work

Just because the Calgary Stampeders won in week one, it doesn’t mean they don’t have things to work on.  Sometimes wins can hide issues. Good teams don’t let that happen; they continue to improve, regardless of the results.  Here are some of the week 1 mistakes that Calgary needs to improve if they want to enjoy a successful season. Offense Scoring 38 points and winning is obviously not a bad game. But the Calgary Stampeders’ offense wasn’t perfect. There is still plenty of room for improvement.  The biggest issue was turnovers. Vernon Adams Jr. threw two interceptions. Adams had an overall good day (19/28 for 284 yards), but he will need to take care of the ball better in the future.  The Stampeders also had a turnover on downs on a failed QB sneak attempt by P.J.
