Excitement in Hamilton: The Tiger-Cats Welcome WR Joe Ngata
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have started the 2025 season with a season-opening loss in Calgary to go 0-1 for the fifth consecutive season. Hamilton’s failure to secure a win to start the season has led to roster adjustments as the Tiger-Cats seek a way to ensure a victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their home opener. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats signed American quarterback Jake Dolegala to their practice roster.
The addition of Dolegala to the practice squad suggests that the Tiger-Cats are seeking more information about the Roughriders’ offense to increase the odds of securing their first win of the season. Along with signing Dolegala, the Tiger-Cats also released American wide receiver Josh Johnson from their roster. The removal of Johnson left an opening on the Tiger-Cats roster, specifically within their broad receiver position group.
The CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have filled that receiver spot by signing American wide receiver Joseph Ngata. Ngata joins the Tiger-Cats roster after spending the 2023 and 2024 NFL seasons on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad roster. In addition, Ngata signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL in early 2025, but the Stallions cut Ngata before playing in any games for Birmingham.
The 6’3″, 217-pound wide receiver Ngata played college football at Clemson University from 2019 until 2022. While playing for the Tigers, Ngata played in 45 games. During his time at Clemson, Ngata caught 88 passes for 1,287 passing yards and six receiving touchdowns.
While Ngata may be a stopgap player to fill a roster spot for the Tiger-Cats, Ngata happens to bring some valuable skills to the CFL. Ngata has built a reputation as an athletic receiver with elite speed, in addition to a high degree of toughness, and possesses the prototypical size for a professional wide receiver. The only weaknesses for Ngata are that he can be a poor route runner and he tends to drop passes.
