Ailing Argos Face Uphill Battle Against Alouettes Tonight

Argos Uphill Battle: Facing the Montreal Alouettes in Week 7 of the 2025 CFL Season

As the Toronto Argonauts (1-4) prepare to take on the Montreal Alouettes (3-2) tonight at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, the defending Grey Cup champions find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

With a dismal start to the 2025 CFL season, the Argos are grappling with injuries, defensive woes, and an offense struggling to find its rhythm. Toronto is off to its worst season start since the Michael Pinball Clemons/Ryan Diwiddie era began. In theory, the Boatmen should be benefiting coming off a much-needed bye week. But Week 7 has arrived, and there is still no Chad Kelly in sight. To make matters worse, Toronto has lost its best offensive linemen, Ryan Hunter, to a freak accident.

Reigning CFL top lineman Ryan Hunter suffered a serious shoulder injury this week when he was hit by a car while riding a scooter. Team officials have confirmed that Hunter is expected to be out at least six to eight weeks—a devastating blow for Double Blue, who can’t catch a break.

Toronto is facing an Alouettes team, which handled the Argos efficiently in Week 1, beating the Boatmen 28-10 in Montreal. The Als have lost two straight games but are also coming off a bye week, and they get back starting quarterback Davis Alexander.

The odds are heavily stacked against Toronto in Week 7. Montreal is a ten-and-a-half-point favorite at home tonight, with the over/under set at 50 points. Considering how the Boatmen’s defense gave up 51 points to Hamilton in Week 5, tonight’s point total seems conservative.

CFL Week 7: Argos @ Alouettes Game Notes

  • Both teams are coming off byes. Since 2023, Toronto is 6-0 and Montreal 5-1 on a week’s rest.
  • Toronto leads the league with 14 sacks, and Montreal is second with 13.
  • Since 2022, Toronto is 7-3 in the team’s regular season matchups.
  • Last week, Kevin Mital had career-highs in receptions (eight), targets (nine), and receiving yards (104), while scoring his second TD of the season.
  • In their Week 1 matchup, Damonte Coxie notched five receptions for 99 yards.
  • An Alouettes victory would give them the tie-breaker over Toronto. They have not won the season series since 2019.
  • Montreal leads the league in turnover ratio at +6; Toronto is -4.
  • At 7-0 as a starter, Davis Alexander is tied with Jeff Garcia and Bo Levi Mitchell for the second-best stretch to begin a career. Danny McManus holds the record at 8-0.

Week 7 Lineup Notes

With Ryan Hunter out, Toronto’s revamped line sees George Moore on the left side and Anim Dankwah on the right side at tackle. Anthony Vandal and Sage Doxtater are at guard in the latest Argos reconfiguration. They will be blocking upfront for the duo of Deonta McMahon and Khalan Laborn at tailback.

Montreal is relatively healthy going into tonight’s contest. With the exception of wide receiver Tyson Philpot, who is a game-time decision with a knee injury.

Keys To The Game

For the Argos to pull off the upset as heavy road underdogs, they will need to form a semblance of a rushing attack finally. The Boatmen have no balance on offense. They have tasked Nick Arbuckle with carrying a more significant burden than he did late last season.

Toronto’s lack of talent due to injuries and offseason losses has led to the team playing undisciplined, as they have been outmatched. Struggling teams tend to press and make more mistakes when facing superior football teams. The Argos need to play mistake-free football to have a chance against the Alouettes in Montreal.

The Als haven’t been the same offensively without Davis Alexander, but their two-game losing streak has also highlighted some defensive deficiencies. It’s not for a lack of talent. Montreal needs to control the line of scrimmage and limit Toronto’s ability to make any big plays. If they can do that, they should win.

Prediction

The Argos are in a very bad way right now. Luck hasn’t been on their side, but they are also paying for their sins and losses in the off-season. The team is nowhere near as good at the line of scrimmage as they were a year ago. Regardless of who their quarterback is.

Anything can happen in the CFL, but it’s hard to imagine Toronto flipping the switch in their current state.
