CFL News Hub Power Rankings.  The Aftermath of Week 2.

Week 2 is now in the books for the 2025 CFL season, and we saw a lot of ups and downs, as was in every scheduled week of seasons past.  Some surprises with Calgary opening with a 2-0 record, followed by three winless teams in the East division, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Toronto Argonauts, and the Ottawa Redblacks. Last but not least, congratulations to the D.C. Defenders, who were crowned the 2025 UFL Champions with their 58-34 victory over the Michigan Panthers.  To say the game was a shootout does not do justice.  The D.C. Defenders were a video game stat in the 2nd quarter with 31 points alone. Here are your power rankings after week 2. 1:  Montreal Alouettes Previous ranking: 1 The Montreal Alouettes are a team that appears poised to be a real threat to opposing teams during the duration of the 2025 CFL season.  They are a team that approaches every game thus far with the same mentality.  Win every play or series.  In foo...

Saturday afternoon’s game is intended to be a celebration of the Argos’ Grey Cup 111 victory and their 19th overall CFL championship in front of their loyal Double Blue crowd. The Argonauts didn’t look like defending champs in a mistake-filled 28-10 loss to Montreal. In Week 2, Toronto faces a proud Calgary club that has moved past last year’s disappointing 5-12-1 campaign. It was the first time in two decades, that the Stampeders missed the postseason. Calgary Stampeders Week 1 Recap: Breaking Down What Still Needs Work

Image
Just because the Calgary Stampeders won in week one, it doesn’t mean they don’t have things to work on.  Sometimes wins can hide issues. Good teams don’t let that happen; they continue to improve, regardless of the results.  Here are some of the week 1 mistakes that Calgary needs to improve if they want to enjoy a successful season. Offense Scoring 38 points and winning is obviously not a bad game. But the Calgary Stampeders’ offense wasn’t perfect. There is still plenty of room for improvement.  The biggest issue was turnovers. Vernon Adams Jr. threw two interceptions. Adams had an overall good day (19/28 for 284 yards), but he will need to take care of the ball better in the future.  The Stampeders also had a turnover on downs on a failed QB sneak attempt by P.J. Walker. Walker is new in that role, but on 3rd and less than one, he needs to be near automatic.  The offensive line is another issue. Allowing two sacks isn’t terrible, b...

Preview: Bombers vs. B.C. & Buck

Image
On Thursday night the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play host to the BC Lions and their new Head Coach, Buck Pierce. Pierce, from 2005-2009, played quarterback for the Lions before becoming Winnipeg’s quarterback. In 2013, the Blue Bomber carousel would begin as Pierce was their only quarterback with CFL experience after the Bombers released Joey Elliot and Alex Brink. In Week 5 of 2013, Pierce fell on the depth chart to the third spot behind Justin Goltz who became the starter, and Alex Hall who took the number two spot; I will forgive you if you forgot those guys ever played. After his playing career, Pierce was announced as the Bomber’s running backs coach, in a position he served in for two seasons. Afterwards, he was named the club’s quarterback’s coach, and won a Grey Cup with the Bombers in 2019. In 2020, Pierce was named the Bomber’s offensive coordinator and served in that role until 2024. Most recently, Pierce is known for being the offensive coordinator that cou...

Week 2 CFL Preview: Calgary Stampeders vs Toronto Argonauts

Image
After struggling last season, the Calgary Stampeders have a chance to open the season 2–0.  Meanwhile, last season’s champions have a chance to open the season 0–2.  Obviously, it’s a long season, and two games won’t determine the championship. That being said, going 2–0 would be huge for morale in Calgary and bad for morale in Toronto.  On paper, the Week 2 matchup should be a fun one. They are closely ranked in the CFL News Hub rankings (Calgary #5 and Toronto #6). Toronto Argonauts The Toronto Argonauts might be the defending champions, but a lot has changed since November. The Argonauts are sporting 13 new starters this season and struggled mightily in their 28–10 season-opening loss. If they’re going to turn things around this week, they will need to improve in several key areas.  Toronto Argonauts’ keys to Victory Offensive line play The Argos only gave up 3 sacks in week one , but it felt like more. Montreal was in the bac...

Excitement in Hamilton: The Tiger-Cats Welcome WR Joe Ngata

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have started the 2025 season with a season-opening loss in Calgary to go 0-1 for the fifth consecutive season. Hamilton’s failure to secure a win to start the season has led to roster adjustments as the Tiger-Cats seek a way to ensure a victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their home opener. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats signed American quarterback Jake Dolegala to their practice roster. The addition of Dolegala to the practice squad suggests that the Tiger-Cats are seeking more information about the Roughriders’ offense to increase the odds of securing their first win of the season. Along with signing Dolegala, the Tiger-Cats also released American wide receiver Josh Johnson from their roster. The removal of Johnson left an opening on the Tiger-Cats roster, specifically within their broad receiver position group. The CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have filled that receiver spot by signing American wide receiver Joseph N...
